AD B 2007 recognises the role that domestic sprinkler installations, designed to BS 9251:2005, may have as a compensatory feature. Where domestic sprinklers are installed it is possible to:
- avoid the need to have a secondary escape staircase where there is a floor over 7.5m high (four storey houses, typically).
- have an ‘open-plan’ layout where a loft conversion is carried out to an existing two storey house, thereby avoiding the need for an enclosed protected staircase.
