Important Building Regulations updates to Approved Document B

The Ministry for Housing Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) has announced important Building Regulations updates to Approved Document B – due to be published next month-and increased fire safety measures for high-rise flats. These have been updated to further tighten fire safety, following the recent MHCLG consultation.

Approved Document B will have some changes to wayfinding in the common areas of flats, probably a requirement to have the floor number painted/fixed to the walls within the staircase, but also requiring sprinklers to be provided on high-rise flats with a floor level above 11m, rather than the current requirement of 30m. There are no details yet on transitional provisions but we’re expecting to hear something from MHCLG very soon – if you have a project planned that falls into the category above, contact your Quadrant Project Manager for the latest information.
